Why Do Hair Transplant Graft Number Estimates Vary from Clinic to Clinic?

This hair restoration question was answered by hair loss forum member “ArochaHair”, online representative for Coalition physician Dr. Bernardino Arocha:

I sent my pre-op pictures to 3 different hair transplant surgeons in India (2 FUE, 1 Strip using Trichophytic Closure). One says I need 2200 grafts. Another says 3000. Third says 4000. I’m very confused.

Also, the strip doctor claims I will have invisible scars (he’s the cheapest of the lot). Can I trust him in his claim? All 3 are recommended and reviewed in this forum.

There are no guarantees with follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) or with follicular unit extraction (FUE). None. The first steps you should consider are to look at cases on the websites of these hair restoration physicians and ask yourself if you see similar cases with similar graft estimates that they gave you and if those results are what you would consider to be desirable.

Ask them to explain the differences between quotes that you’ve received. Any estimate you’ve been given should be explainable if required.

Hiding a Chin Scar with Hair Transplant Surgery

This question, from a member of our hair loss social community and discussion forums, was answered by Coalition hair transplant surgeon Dr. David Josephitis:

I have this scar on my face which I received when I was a baby. Is there a way to to perform a beard transplant to it, maybe with a follicular unit extraction hair transplant or maybe some other treatment?

I think Beard FUE would be an excellent way to help cover the scar. Typically we can get anywhere from 300-500 beard FUE grafts in a session. Because you have scaring also in the underside of the beard where we typically take the hair from, we would probably only get 200 -300 grafts. We could also take scalp FUE to supplement that.

It is most likely going to take more than one session to really blend in the area. After one session of FUE into the scar, oftentimes the skin become more normal and softer. May goal for you would be to evenly place graft on the side and underside of your chin. That way, after shaving you would have a more even shadow.

Not Satisfied With My Hair Transplant “Results” at 6 Months?

I had a hair transplant about 6 months ago and I’m not satisfied with my results. My hair grew in very thin, it’s weak and full of dandruff I’m taking some vitamins and use Nizoral twice a week. what else should I do to improve the hair structure? Do you recommended any kind of serum or cream that might help the scalp be healthy and clean?

A lot of hair transplant patients have concerns 6 months after surgery because for some reason they are under the impression that they should be seeing the final result. The truth is, 6 months is still very early on and patients will continue experiencing hair growth and thickness for another 6 to 12 months.  Thus, it’s not accurate to use the word “result” at only 6 months after surgery.  Instead, the word we suggest is “progress”.  In most cases, patients are safe to evaluate their hair transplant and call it a “result” 1 year after surgery.  That said, ongoing growth and thickness can and will likely continue up to 18 months post-op.  Sometimes, there may even be a cosmetically significant improvement between 1 year and 18 months although most patients see the most cosmetically significant result around 12 months after surgery.

While there’s nothing wrong with taking vitamins or minerals that are good for your hair, time and patience are the ingredients you need to see the cosmetic improvements in your hair transplant over the next 6 months.

Hang in there.

After a hair transplant procedure, what happens to the donor area? Does the donor hair grow back or not? Do hair transplant surgeons typically perform every aspect of the hair restoration procedure? Few hair restoration physicians perform 100% of a hair transplant.
